GCSE Results 2018

GCSE Results 2018

Posted: 23rd August 2018

Royal Docks Academy is celebrating its best GCSE results ever.

The 2017 summer exam season saw students sitting the new grade 9 to 1 GCSEs for the first time in maths and English, with the majority of other subjects switching to the new format this year.

The 9 to 1 numerical grades do not map across in a simple way to the A* to G grades. A grade 9 is not comparable to an A*, for example.

At Royal Docks it was celebrations all round as the results were revealed.

A total of 52 per cent of students achieved the national standard of 9 to 4 grades in English and maths – the highest achievement in the history of the school.

Compared to last year, the number of students achieving grades 9 to 4 in maths has improved by 13 per cent, while the number of students achieving the same grades in English language has risen by nine per cent and five per cent in English literature.

In computer science, the results are up by an impressive 47 per cent year on year, from 30 per cent getting A* to C last year to 77 per cent gaining grades 9 to 4 this year.

Top performing students this year include –

Hanna Abdallah – 9,8,8,Distinction,7,7,7,7,7,7,7,
Harry Bruns – 8,8,8,8,A,7,7,6,6,6
Chanelle Callison – 9,9,8,7,7,6,6,6,6,5,5
Mahim Chowdhury – 9,9,8,8,8,8,8,A,6,6,5
Milot Dvorani – 8,A,Distinction,7,7,7,7,7,6,6,6,5
Hussain Gondal – 8,7,7,7,7,B,6,6,6,5,5
Athena Kindell – 9,8,8,8,8,A,7,7,7,6,6,6
Juliana Medina – 8,8,A,7,6,6,5,5,5

Mekha Periakaruppan – 8,8,8,7,7,6,5,5,5,4,4
Fabiha Azad – 8,8,A,Distinction,7,7,6,6,6,6,6,6

The school became a part of multi-academy trust BMAT in January when a wealth of changes and improvements were brought in to raise aspirations and achievement.

Executive head John Blaney said: “I am delighted with what students at Royal Docks have achieved. This marks a significant increase on last year’s results, indeed, the best results in the school’s history. This is down to the hard work and commitment of the staff here.

“Since joining BMAT, staff have shown their dedication and expectations of what Newham children can achieve. They have given up time after school, at weekends and in holidays to ensure our students were prepared. Our students jumped at the opportunities on offer and this is reflected in these results.

“I am so happy for the students and wish them every success in the next stage of their education.”

Helena Mills CBE, BMAT CEO, said: “It has been great to see such a rapid turn-around in behaviour and expectations at Royal Docks.

“Both staff and students have worked incredibly hard since January and we are proud of today’s results.”
