Personal Social & Health Education (PSHE) - Learning Map
PSHE at Royal Docks will give our young people the unstoppable confidence that they can achieve amazing things, teaching them to cope with the challenges that life brings and recognise their achievements – because they each have their own, unique potential to fulfil.
Personal, social, health, economic education (PSHE) is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge and attributes to become happy by keeping themselves healthy and safe and by preparing for life and work in modern Britain. Our PSHE curriculum has been devised to promote the wellbeing of all our pupils (wellbeing is defined in the Children Act 2004 as the promotion of physical and mental health; emotional wellbeing; social and economic wellbeing; education, training and recreation; recognition of the contribution made by children to society; and protection from harm and neglect).
Evidence has shown that PSHE has a profound impact on academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils. Employers want the character and resilience that a PSHE education provides. PSHE prepares you for an increasingly varied range of graduate career paths. Pupils of PSHE have the foundations to undertake undergraduate and master’s degrees in psychotherapy and counselling, medicine, youth work, criminology, social work and social policy, education studies, sociology and healthcare professions (arts therapy, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy).
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education plays a vital role in supporting pupils’ personal development and wellbeing. Our PSHE curriculum follows the statutory requirements set out by the Department for Education, ensuring all pupils learn about relevant topics within Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.
We deliver PSHE through a blended model that includes:
-
Drop Down Days every half term, where students take part in extended sessions focused on key themes such as mental health, online safety, careers, and relationships.
-
Fortnightly PSHE Assemblies, introducing important themes, current issues, and British Values.
-
Reflection Lessons that alternate with assemblies every two weeks, allowing students to explore themes in more depth, discuss personal viewpoints, and link ideas to their own lives.
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to help pupils:
-
Develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life and work.
-
Build confidence, resilience and respect for others.
-
Understand the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in modern Britain.
Through this approach, PSHE supports our wider school ethos of developing responsible, reflective and respectful citizens.
